Shoes track in outdoor dust, which joins forces with indoor dust to create an allergen-filled environment. But, dust can be drastically reduced if you leave your shoes at the door. Set up shoe storage in your entryway or mudroom and get into the habit of kicking them off as soon as you walk in the door. Areas around the home that are heavily used, such as beds and upholstered furniture, will have much higher mite populations than the rest of the house.

The same is true of products containing tannic acid (e.g., Allergy Control Solution), which are designed to denature dust mite allergens so that they no longer cause symptoms.
