Dust mite allergy Symptoms & causes

house dust mite

Since the greatest fallout occurs in areas of human and pet activity, the mites tend to be most numerous in beds, overstuffed sofas and chairs, and adjacent carpeted areas. Relative humidity also tends to be higher in these areas, because people perspire and exhale water vapor where they sleep and lounge. Mattresses, sofas, carpet, and other soft furnishings trap and accumulate dust, dander, and moisture, making them ideal microhabitats for mite development.

The best way to eliminate this problem is to invest in vacuums with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems or try wet vacuums, which trap dust in a water container that prevents it from going airborne. First, realize that by limiting the amount of dust in your home, you’re also beginning to eradicate the mites within it. Secondly, there are additional things you can do to combat dust mites specifically, so take note if you think you have an uptick of them in your home.

Useful Tips for Eliminating House Mites

After completion of the pulmonary function testing, mice were euthanized with an overdose of ketamine/xylazine, and blood was collected via cardiac puncture21,22. BAL fluid was centrifuged (400 RPM, 10 min) to obtain cell-free supernatants and stored at −80 °C; the cell pellet was re-suspended in 500 ml phosphate buffered saline (PBS) for total leukocyte counts using a hemocytometer21,22,23. Differential leukocyte counts were performed using a StatSpin Cytofuge 2 (Beckman Coulter Inc, CA, USA), with 70 μl of the resuspended pellets stained using the HEMA3 stain set (Fisher Scientific, PA, USA).

How can I reduce the number of mites in my house?

They are available as mattress covers, duvet covers and pillow cases and go under your normal bed covers. If a mattress cover is used there is no need to vacuum the mattress. Covers should be breathable, to allow water/body moisture to pass through them, and should completely enclose the item. Buy products that have been tested to show they prevent the escape of the house dust mite allergen. The guidelines advise that in order to effectively mitigate (reduce) household exposure to dust mites, it's key to put in place at least three measures known to help eliminate dust mites.

Indoor Air Quality

Areas where people spend much time, like in bed or a favorite plush chair, are prime sites for dust mites. The top part of mattresses containing fibrous material is a favorite place for dust mites during warm and humid times. The deeper parts of mattresses may provide protected areas for the dust mites during unfavorable conditions. Clothing is used by dust mites as transportation from room to room or even from house to house. Ongoing exposure to dust mites at home can impact the health of people with asthma and those who are allergic or sensitive to mites.

Diagnosis and treatment for dust mite allergies

Shoes track in outdoor dust, which joins forces with indoor dust to create an allergen-filled environment. But, dust can be drastically reduced if you leave your shoes at the door. Set up shoe storage in your entryway or mudroom and get into the habit of kicking them off as soon as you walk in the door. Areas around the home that are heavily used, such as beds and upholstered furniture, will have much higher mite populations than the rest of the house.

Treatment

If you have what seems like a constant runny nose, sneezing, wheezing, shortness of breath or other symptoms that may be related to an allergy, you'll probably start by seeing your family doctor or general practitioner. Because appointments can be brief and there's often a lot of ground to cover, it's a good idea to prepare before you go. To confirm that you're allergic to some airborne substance, your doctor may use a lighted instrument to look at the condition of the lining of your nose. If you have an allergy to something airborne, the lining of the nasal passage will be swollen and may appear pale or bluish. Dust mites are one of the major indoor triggers for people with asthma.

Asthma

Medications or other treatments are sometimes necessary to relieve symptoms and manage asthma. Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to tiny bugs that commonly live in house dust. Signs of dust mite allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose. Many people with dust mite allergy also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.

The authors would like to thank Dalia Othman for her technical assistance with the 2-week HDM model. This work was funded by the Lung Association and the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Fixed lung tissue was dehydrated using ethanol and xylene and embedded in paraffin (Electron Microscopy Science, Hatfield, PA, USA).

For example, you may have more difficulty managing your asthma for a short time during the summer. Dust mite allergy, on the other hand, is due to something to which you're constantly exposed to some degree. Therefore, you may not recognize it as a factor complicating your asthma when, in fact, it may be a primary cause.

Hirschmann (1986) reported that dust mites were attracted to white DIN-A4 sheets of typewriter paper placed where the dust mites are suspected. Paper is examined in the mornings and evenings by holding the paper over a lamp. Both male and female adult house dust mites are globular in shape, creamy white and have a striated cuticle. The female measures approximately 420 microns in length and 320 microns in width. The male is approximately 420 microns long and 245 microns wide.

Mite-killing products containing benzyl benzoate (e.g., Acarosan) are available for treatment of carpeting, upholstery, and other surfaces. Although benzyl benzoate will kill dust mites, clinical trials are lacking that show much improvement in allergy symptoms. The same is true of products containing tannic acid (e.g., Allergy Control Solution), which are designed to denature dust mite allergens so that they no longer cause symptoms.
